Jhafis Quintero was at SWAB Barcelona Invited by Direlia Lazo and Carolina Ariza
Jhafis Quintero (1973, Panama) uses video, performance, drawing and writing to create a body of work inspired by the events of his own life. The power of Jhafis Quinteros’ videos lies in the fundamental transformation of a personal experience into a universal one, and in the resonance of that conversion. When Quintero confronts his alter-ego in an imaginary box-fight, and fights against his shadowless self (“Knock Out”, 2012, “Venice Biennial” 2013), he underlines the difficulty we all face in reconciling the paradoxical facets of our personalities. “No I” (2011) addresses the challenge in communicating with, and understanding, the other. Quintero’s videos, which he compares to Haikus, are extremely poetic, and leave the viewer perplex, in a world of questions without answers and beauty without ornaments.
Seven videos from the series Ten Years in Jail have been be shown, as well as drawings.
