A different love: objects, do you have a soul?
In reference to the famous quotation by Alphonse de Lamartine in Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, 1830: « Objets inanimés, avez-vous donc une âme qui s’attache à notre âme et la force d’aimer ? », this screening, which features videos by Paul Ardenne, Janet Biggs, Justine Emard, Shaun Gladwell, Sandra Hoyn, Ali Kazma (with Jacques Coulais), Pierre Pauze & Raphael Siboni, echoes MOI LA GRUE – ME, THE CRANE, Barbara Polla’s most recent book, the bittersweet love story of a crane and a craneman. As Paul Ardenne states in his video, the bond between humans and machines creates a « superhumanity »: in the specific case of motorbikes for example, the biker develops a very intimate relationship with his machine. This intimacy of the relationship and the love we devote to mechanics and mechatronics go beyond the limits of a reasonable, Apollonian love: this is Dionysian passion as Nietzsche described it, with a complete deregulation of the senses. Machines can become figures of excitement that lead to an excessive, violent love and a deep fusion between man and machine.
